The other chimps in The Heart of the Forest call them the Unwilling Echo, because the joyful roar one hears is never their own. It belongs to the gleeful passenger perched atop their head, a tiny companion with an insatiable appetite for the adventures Kajuha would rather avoid. Before their power awakened, Kajuha’s grandest ambition was perfecting a sunberry tart. But the fren led them on a chase into a hidden glade, and an accidental stumble into a pool of raw energy changed everything. Their first frustrated shout caused a week’s worth of acorns to rain down. This chaotic display drew the eye of Henso, who saw untrained potential. Kajuha tried to refuse the training, but their fren eagerly accepted on their behalf.
