Chimper #83
When the river trade slowed to a trickle one dry season, Najika and Mafumi pooled their savings for a single, promising venture. They were just kids with a shared fishing rod, dreaming of a stall in the grand plaza of Waterfall City. A visiting frog merchant with a wide smile offered them an โenchantedโ net for their entire haul of silver-scaled river trout. They took the deal, their hearts pounding with hope. The net, of course, was ordinary, and the merchant was gone by morning. Mafumi was heartbroken, but Najika just sat by the water, methodically eating a bowl of noodles. They learned a lesson that day hunger cannot teach: trust is more expensive than fish. They still fish with Mafumi, but their eyes are always squinted, sizing up every deal and every face.
