The Shadow of the Lower Steps, that's what the fishers of Waterfall City call them. They see the ninja morph and the lanterns and assume Yoanna guides souls or secrets up the slick stone stairs. Yoanna lets them believe it. It's a kinder story than the truth they carry. The truth is, a lantern just like these once signaled an ambush. A trusted partner's light, a promise of a safe meeting. Instead, it was a blade in the dark and a long fall into the cold spray at the city's bottom. They survived, but the scar on their face is a constant reminder of the price of trust. They carry the lanterns now not to light the way for others, but to remember how easily a guiding light can lead you into darkness.
