Chimper #5057
The kitsune mask Natsura wears isn’t made of wood, the fishers say, but of petrified river foam. Down by the rushing falls of Waterfall City, they’ll tell you Natsura uses it to scoop up startled fish, a playful trick from a wandering spirit. They see a comedian, a harmless enigma who barters with riddles and pays with laughter. But the guards on the upper tiers, they see something else. They see how the mask never shifts, even when Natsura stumbles. One old Annonite exile passed through and recognized not the mask, but the emptiness behind it. They knew the blank slate left by Tokumei's ritual. “They are not hiding a face,” the exile told a rapt audience, “They are borrowing one. All that they were was given away.”
