Nagateru

Nagateru is a creature of the wrong element. Ask the singing locals in the central clearing of The Heart of the Forest, and they’ll say Nagateru is a ghost, a water spirit trapped under the amber leaves, forever shocked at their terrestrial prison. Ask the cooks, and they’ll insist Nagateru is an eccentric noble, judging their every meal with those furious eyes, and that the octopus is just a bizarre fashion statement. But if you find one of the quiet elders who speaks with Mokuzai, they will tell you a different story. They will speak of a promise made at a river’s edge, where a storm had cast a life far from its home. Mokuzai offered shelter not from pity, but from recognition of a shared, fierce independence. The octopus isn't a pet; it's a reminder of a world that was lost to the water.
